Why "Lens in the Crowd"?

A lot of people wonder about the name, but few ask.  There is actually a story behind it:

It started when I was taking pictures for the wrestling boosters during my sophomore year in high school.  I'd religiously been attending the matches for a little over a month when one of the coaches approached me about taking some photographs.  Overnight I went from being someone who went unnoticed in the stands to someone who was treated almost as if they were some sort of threat.  I don't know why I made some of the wrestlers so uncomfortable, but I know that I did.  When I was 'just a face in the crowd' there was nothing wrong with me being there, but the camera seemed to make all the difference.  I quickly learned that the less I stuck out, the more comfortable they were with my shooting the matches.  I made a conscious effort to become 'just a lens in the crowd.'  And things went smoother.

I still hold onto the lesson that I took from those wrestlers.  I know that people are more comfortable with a photographer who is skilled and professional, but keeps her distance and does not stand out at their events.  Your guests should almost have to question whether or not you have a photographer present during your event and the sound of advancing film and the burst of the flash should be their only clues.
